why the hell are they all opened already?

Because they don't want to waste any time.  That's the boat coming in right there.
So they're just going to chug 4 beers each and sail away?

They'll probably chug 4 beers each, fall off the boat, stagger to the hotel and take a shower.  Then a nap, then get up and drink more beer.  They've been sailing for 3 weeks with no bathing facilities.  They stink.
"Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?"
I think so, Brain, but how will we get the Spice Girls into the paella?

Just fyi- I'm getting all of this information from the VOR website (http://www.volvooceanrace.com)

Unfortunately, I haven't kept in contact with any of the people I knew from the last race.

Huge-ass ocean and they can't find water to bathe in?
11:42:24 [Gamplayerx] I keep getting knocked up.

yeah!  they should dump soap and shampoo all over themselves, tie a rope around their waist and jump over the side and let the boat drag them along...then the other sailors can just pull him back in
Some people look at jerky and say, "Why?"  I look at jerky and say, "Mmm! Jerky!"

Phew!  "My" boat made it safely in to port this morning, in 4th place, but still 2nd overall in the points standing thanks to some earlier wins in in port racing.  I saw this photo and almost burst into tears.  Richard Mason (in the picture) was one of my favorite racers last time, he is a very nice man, and his daughter hadn't even been born then.  To see him hug her like that, I can just imagine how good he feels to see her.

I still don't understand why the beers are open.
16:15:43 [Gamplayerx] Juneau, I could really go for some pie. You better Belize it!

So they don't hurt themselves with metal can openers.

Why would they need can openers?  You people are confusing.

I think that they totally need can openers.  Canned foods are certainly more resilient in open water conditions than dry goods.

They're off on leg two, from Cape Town to Melbourne.  Not too much scary exciting has happened, except my boat broke and had to withdraw from the leg.  :(  Nobody got hurt, which is good, and they weren't too far in to the leg to turn back, so that's good.

Here's an email I found on the VOR website from one of the guys on another boat:

Quote
To get the adrenaline levels up again, how about this piece from Luke Molloy? "There is something exhilarating about blasting through waves in the darkness of night with very little guidance but some numbers illuminated on the mast. The numbers become your life string, the only thing except for feel that is stopping you from crashing the boat and injuring the crew or my house mates in this case.

"As the boat skips along through 25, 28, 30knots of boat speed, my grip on the wheel tightens, my knees bend and body tenses up a little because my gut instinct can feel the inevitable. . .

"NOSEDIVE! 31, 32 and BOOF!

"My comrades and I are jolted forward like we have hit a brick wall, then smashed back by the engulfing water sloshing down the deck. There is no time to even think of what just happened as we are off again down the next wave and the cycle is repeated, 25, 28 ,30. . .

"This has now become another part of life on the street fighter tour of the world, along with being constantly wet, sleep deprived and generally in a little discomfort. The daily routine becomes even more challenging at this speed, even moving around the boat has potential to go wrong and end up in a pool of water or worse. This is also made harder again as I write to you now with small cuts on my hands that never dry, turning into little sores on my fingers, not to mention this moving keyboard and computer screen.

No thanks.  I'll stay on land.

God, that picture is so awful.

I hate when men wear "diamonds" that are that big... they wear them so they look like they have a lot of money to attract the hos with.  It's so obvious they are fake.
