oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are my favorite cookie ever. my recipe calls them "cowboy cookies", which i've never understood. i don't *think* i remember reading that cowboys ate a lot of oatmeal, but i never watched Lonesome Dove. did they cover the oatmeal angle there?

It's probably because it keeps well on the range and is easy to prepare over a fire.  But no, I don't think Lonesome Dove ever covered that one.  Good movie by the way.  I saw part of the sequel and it was good too.

I've got Lonesome Dove on DVD, and I didn't see anything in it about cookies.

no oatmeal either?

so here's a lonesome dove questio: (cue threadjack!)
i read the book, and fairly early on in the journey, one of the young cowboys is killed while they are crossing a river. he is caught in an enormous nest of water moccasins and dies in a particularly gruesome, painful and fast manner.

if this is included in the movie, i will not be able to ever watch it.

The scene is in there, but they never really show the snakes in the water.  You see thrashing and screaming.  The gruesome death, however, is included.  It is actually a very emotional scene.

I have a recipe from my mother for chocolate oatmeal cookies. Instead of standard cookie dough, you make a rich chocolate cookie batter (with coco powder) and add oatmeal to it. In my opinion it is better than standard chocolate chip cookies. But just barely.

it's very emotional in the book, too. shocking - you, along with everyone in the company, are already lulled into thinking that nothing bad will happen until they *get* somewhere..... and he's so young and such a sweet boy. it's a very sobering and frightening scene. not even including the snakes.
