HBMS is pretty good.

Dunno how I feel about the Mars Volta... haven't been impressed by the two songs of theirs that I've heard.  Technically sound, but just not my thing.

They're basically showy prog/drug rock.  But they're also talented.  It's not always compelling, but it's good when I'm in the right mood for it.  Their "singles" don't really do the experience justice.  You have to hear an album front to back.

My wife loves the HBMS school "First... and then..." so much that she had me turn it into a sound theme for her compy.  So now when you boot up, you get the chorus, and when you shut down, you get the second chorus.  When you pop a menu, it says "First..." and when you select an item it says "and then..."
