The new season of Battlestar Galactica starts tonight.   If you haven't already seen it, do yourself a favor and rent/buy/download the Miniseries.  It's fantastic.  Sadly, there's not date on the Season 1 DVD yet.

Yes, it's a remake of the original Battlestar Galactica series.  The original suffered from 2 creative minds being very different.  One wanted a dark show, one wanted a goofy campy show.  The show crapped out because of it. 

The new series is dark.  In the original I think it was 50 Million humans survived the assault.  In the new one, 50,000 humans survived.  It's fantastic acting, writing, development, action, and graphics.  Well worth your time.  See if you can track down the Miniseries and give it a shot.  Blockbuster/Netflix probably has it.

People keep telling me I need to watch that show, but I just don't see how I could break myself away from the midget porn for that long.

I watched the miniseries last night.

Biggest problem - Starbuck.  Badly written character is also badly miscast.  Also, her problems with the XO of the ship... that whole subplot is really silly.

Olmos underplays his character so much at times he seems positively disinterested, though that technique works well in scenes with Mary McDonnell.

Of course, it was good fun watching the majority of humanity get slaughtered.

The new, human-looking Cylons worked better than I thought they would, but still aren't as cool looking or hold the malevolent presence of the blatantly robotic ones.

The real selling point of the show for me was the space battles.  I thought they nailed that part.  They looked great, were paced well, and very quickly established the level of threat the Cylon army posed.

Oh, the director had a serious issue with timing his dramatic beats.  Scenes that should have had impact would either peak too soon or not at all.

All in all, a B, with room for improvement if they make the Starbuck character less ridiculous.

There was lots of cheeseball dialogue that could have been done away with.

I've seen about 4 or 5 episodes and i felt it was a mixed bag too.  Some parts were very very interesting while others had me flipping channels and not caring about returning right away.

You really have to sit down and watch the series about a week after you watch the mini.  The series writing is amazing.
