The cards refer to the doors.  So the card symbol that matches the symbol on door 1 (not the card you found in behind door 1) goes in the 1 spot on the stupid, frustrating cross.  I was too stupid to notice the symbols on the doors for the most part, so I got it by trial and error.

No spoiler needed.  I had tried corresponding colors to doors, symbols to rooms, etc.  I was giving the shape of the cross more importance than I should have.  I sat down with a piece of paper and mapped out the order of the rooms as I entered them, and matched that to the numbers on the cross.  Bingo!

You know of more games like this?
