after that movie came out, there were many beachgoers and fishermen with binoculars.

I saw the movie in Massachusetts, and used to sail not far from where they shot it.  I was 12, and really, really shouldn't have seen that movie.

it gave most a fear factor.... there are quite a few sharks not far off shore in my area, mostly in the hotter summer months. rule of thumb "if you see baitfish jumping, don't go swimming."

I wasn't allowed to watch Jaws as a child and didn't end up seeing the original until after I saw part 3.  So much of the shock was diminished but thankfully it's still an amazingly well made film.

I was just down the beach a few years back when that kid in Destin, FL had his arm ripped off by a shark and his uncle went out and beat the shark and got the arm back and everyone called him a hero.  Boy that pissed me off.  I've shared that before, though.  SOrry.

i missed that rant. surfers and locals here are very aware and share that with all, still tourists continue to let their children swim when it is not safe...

Stupid Universal ride.  My dad scarred me forever with that damn thing.   I lived right by a major Coast Guard station and you should have seen all the helos and cutters when there was a shark attack last year.  Scared the hell out of me.
16:15:43 [Gamplayerx] Juneau, I could really go for some pie. You better Belize it!

When my kids were really small we took them on that ride. When that shark came out of the water the look of terror on their little faces was priceless. So priceless, in fact, that people we didn't even know were taking pictures of them.
11:42:24 [Gamplayerx] I keep getting knocked up.
11:42:28 [Gamplayerx] Er. OUT!

Gamplayerx

I didn't even know he was sick.  Or that old.

Jaws came out the year I first went to a Florida beach. I think it kept some of the crowds away.

Jaws scared the hell out of me as a kid.  I still swam in the ocean and do to this day but anytime my foot touches anything not water or sand while I'm swimming, it scares the every-living-shit out of me.  I tried surfing once with a bunch of cabbage-head jelly fish in the water (they don't sting unless you jam your hand underneath them into the head capsule) just the fact that I kept touching stuff when I'd paddle, I got totally freaked out.

PS.  RIP Roy Scheider.

I'm witchoo there.  Ursus and I went snorkeling one time and I FREAKED.  It was in a kelp bed and slimy things kept touching me.

i fish alot in the summer, mostly wading in chest-high water, a lagoon area. it's common to feel critters brush by and there are bull & sand sharks further out in a deep channel. i stepped in a huge manatee hole, "now neck-high in the water" and  scared the shit out of a sleeping manatee. i never knew they can hiss and bark..... he was seriously pissed !!!

Gamplayerx

I've purposefully gone swimming with sharks.  :)

I've never seen a manatee in person. And I've certainly never heard of them showing anger or hissing.  He must have been really startled.
