I've been without computer access at home for the past two days and my ISP tech support can't help me cuz they are idiots.  Let me tell you what the problem is...

I hooked up to the internet (I use dialup) on saturday morning with out any problems.  Then Saturday night, I switched out computers.  (my old computer died and a friend loaned me one to use till I could get a new one.)  I changed the dial up info for my ISP but it won't let me connect to the internet.  My modem does all the screeching and stuff but it doesn't communicate with my ISP.  I was thinking maybe it was the modem or maybe my phone line so I took the computer back to my friend and he hooked it up to his ISP which is different than mine.  It hooked up with no problems.  He then tried my internet settings and couldn't get it to connect.  So, the problem is NOT with the modem.  Anyway, I too it back home and hooked it back up.  And the same thing happens.  No connection, no communication.

Another interesting thing is that I have to diconnect the phone line after each attempt cuz itcauses my phone to go dead. I use Bellsouth.

I'm having internet withdrawels and I need some help.  Anyone have any idea what I should do?  And changing ISPs in to a choice cuz I list my current email address on all my business cards and I just had a bajillion printed up and have passed out just as many.

There, fixed.

She'd probably have to move first.

So, move, then get DSL.

Dry then Catch

does changing ISPs always mean changing your email address? sometiems they have a separate pay email service.

Jessie

I have no idea, Sapph.  Sorry :(

When you called your ISP, did they walk you through all the settings step by totally boring step?

Cuz it sounds like some seemingly random checkbox is either checked or not checked, in opposition to how it's supposed to be.
"Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?"
I think so, Brain, but how will we get the Spice Girls into the paella?

Yes, they did and nothing worked.

However, I just talked to our marketing guy here at the office who moonlights are our IT guy.  He said that the modem in the newer, old computer may not be V.92 upgraded and that I need to upgrade the driver and that may fix the problem.

Ah- that's a good thought.

And of course, I then asked....How am I suppose to upgrade the driver if I can't get online to download the driver?  So, he offered to download the driver and burn it to a cd for me if I would locate the one that I need.  Now I just have to get home and get the model number to the modem that is in the newer, old computer.

If the new driver doesn't work (and I strongly suspect that it won't), I can walk you through everything BellSouth will try. Of course for me to walk you through the troubleshooting, I'll need to call you on a second line or cell phone number. No worries for me because I have Vonage and unlimited long distance, but if I call your cell phone then it will use up your monthly minutes.

PM me your number this evening if you still need help.

No worries about long distance on my cell...I have unlimited minutes.  Let me try the fix the guy here at work gave me and if that doesn't work, then I'll get with you.  PM me your phone number and I'll call if I need help.  Thanks, BD!!

The driver MIGHT be smaller.  Floppy sized.  Check the size of the update before you go CD chasing.

Good point!  Now just to find out what the model number of the modem I have is...I can do that tonight when I get home.

sapphirehart

okay.....found out the moden model number and also that it is a V.90 and of course I need V.92 to be compatable with Bellsouth.  Unfortunately, there is no upgrade for this particular modem soooooo.....off to the store to purchase a new modem.  Hopefully, I will be online tonight and all this geeky stuff will be behind me!

I can't necessarily tell you what the problem is, but I can probably tell you what the problem is not.

The fun series of tones when modems connect with each other is a negotiation of speeds.  If your modem is V.90 capable, and they are V.92 capable, their modem steps down to V.90 during connection.

There's a chance that the driver is behaving incorrectly, but it would generally be behaving incorrectly for any dial-up connection that you try.  Same with the modem.

Did you create a new dial-up connection for your ISP, or did you change the settings in an existing connection?

Believe it or not, I completely understood what you said...I did create a new connection for my ISP and I thought the same thing BUT...the Bellsouth tech support guy and the web site specifically states you MUST have a V.92 modem or you won't connect.
