Somehow I didn't realize until last night that the girl in this movie is the same one from Hard Candy.

did you know she was one of the X-men too?

That's one I didn't catch but you are exactly right.

And she was one scary teen bitch in Hard Candy.  That was a really twisted film.

Jessie

I just watched this and I thought it was really good.  The dialogue was really kind of forced (although funny) for the first half of the film, but I think it got better.

I've heard this compared to Napoleon Dynamite, which I can see in the pacing, somewhat, but that's it.  This movie was exponentially superior to that crap.

Napoleon Dynamite was perfect for its time period.  It struck a collective once-in-a-lifetime collective chord of specific quirky irony that existed only from Oct - Dec 2004 for those 16-25.  In this it was genius, and I remember dying of laughter in theaters.  Any viewing outside this time frame is subject to quality degradation proportional to time elapsed since release.  I'm being completely serious.  By the year 3000 it will be tantamount to the Holocaust.

The more I thought about Juno after, the more it upset me.  It could have been near perfect, if it didn't try so hard with its dialouge.

example:   hamburger phone in background = funny
explaining hamburger phone to abortion clinic = forced

Jessie

The most forced line in the movie:  "It's not an etch-a-sketch.  That's one doodle that can't be undid, homeskillet."

See, I thought some of that dialog was just the parents being dumb but trying to sound cool and of the daughter having just a touch of that same oddness.  I didn't read it as forced but since you guys bring it up, I do think you could make a strong argument for a lot of that.

I seem to be developing a crush on Jason Bateman.  Also, I'd like to smack him upside his head.

He did a good job of making his scenes uncomfortable.

I prefer Paul Rudd's brand of disaffected slacker suburban husband

Have you seen Johnny's wife?  He obviously doesn't have super high standards, so I could totally be in.

Greico on the other hand, he just looks a little creepy.  Well, he did 20 years ago.  I have no idea what he looks like now.

Very true.  Her girlfriend is much less cute than his.
