I won't be in DC anytime soon but you should definately check out Carbon Leaf.  I had a friend recently introduce me to their music, I loved it.  Saw them in concert about two weeks later, loved it.  And then got to talk with their lead guy while waiting in line for the can.  He was really friendly, and very appreciative of feedback.  They played like 11 tunes opening for Big Head Todd and 9 of the 11 were fantastic, 2 were mediocre.  I'd say that's a good ratio for a band I'd never heard of.
