I never mess with the registry for fear of killing it.  WHat do you mean exactly?

there are programs that will "clean it out" for you.  often times when you remove and delete old programs Windows still "thinks" they are there.  so that will slow down processsing speed.  especially on older computers where they might have stacked up over time.  i think a good analogy is like dust collecting on a dresser or something.

here is a freeware link

its a small easy to use file.  i guarantee that should speed up your comp somewhat

Jessie

Thanks Drew.  I'll try that tonight.

REMEMBER REMEMBER ALWAYS EFFING REMEMBER!

If you dork around with the registry, make sure that you make a backup first!

How?  I don't have a cd burner or anything.  What would I back it up to?

Your registry won't fit on a floppy probably.  Just back it up to your C drive.  Go to Start->Run and type regedit in the box that pops up and press enter.  My Computer should be at the top of the tree.  Highlight that, then click on File->Export...  On the dialog that pops up enter the file name and click save.  Once that is done, if any of the tools dork up the registry, all you will need to do is double-click that file to restore everything.

shouldn't there be a system restore point set automatically?

ReBurn

Probably not if you aren't using XP.
