I feel like I should really like them, because so many people do, and I love lvoe love Creep, but they just don't catch my ear.

They play all the time in my Pandora, and I don't realize it til several songs later when I see that they've been playing.  All day long songs get my attention and prompt me to look and see who/what they are, but that never happens with Radiohead.  In fact, a few minutes ago, I saw that Radiohead was playing, and tried to pay attention, and still couldn't tell you if I liked it or not.

Are they really that unremarkable?

They play this Radiohead European concert on one of the movie channels a lot.  It's friggin' awesome.

My honest opinion:

Original Radiohead (first two albums) - this what appeals most to mainstream audiences.  In fact, The Bends (2nd album) is largely considered to be a perfect rock album.

Modern Radiohead (OK Computer on) - Not content to repeat themselves, Radiohead decides to start branching out with instrumentation and experimentation.  The music becomes less catchy but more interesting from an artistic standpoint.  This Radiohead is more for people looking for artier, contemplative rock.  Part of the excitement of a new Radiohead CD now is wondering what the heck they're going to come up with, NOT how catchy the music will be (it largely isn't).

Not all music is for everyone.  And most recent Radiohead isn't going to catch your ear in that way.  If you're looking to appreciate an artist who is trying to expand their sound and ability, then give a modern Radiohead album a listen (I recommend Kid A).  However, if you're looking for catchy/anthemic rock-type music, type in Radiohead's The Bends album into Pandora and you might find something you enjoy (My theme song is on that cd.  Yes, they wrote it just for me.   )

I believe Radiohead is about social change and using music to exemplify the pulse of the post-modern movement.  They are an extremely philosophical band, they deserve a couple of careful listens before being written off.  They put on just about the creepiest rock concert of all time this weekend.

I think that's part of the problem.  They're trying so hard to be about social change that anyone who doesn't agree with their particular sociopolitical stand gets turned off to the music.

I tried listening to Radiohead, but after Pablo Honey, I really couldn't.  I didn't even care for The Bends.

Counting Crows, for comparison, believes some of the same things as Radiohead -- they're kind of leftist -- but I like CC much more than I like Radiohead because, for the most part, CC is not trying to effect social change through their music.  They're trying to effect social change by getting you to listen to what they say because you like their music.

Also.. .the DVD, Live at Astoria was released not to long ago.  It's a show from The Bends tour I think.. back in the 90's.. extremely bad ass.
