I need to finish my review.

At the one hour mark you pretty much can tell where the film is going to end up.  At that point, the joy and interest comes from how the film decides to get there.  Which is decent but not quite compelling.  The ultimate reveal felt sort of malnourished (*snicker*), not carrying the weight (*snicker*) of the first hour and a half.

Still, some really good filmmaking overall, with another good (and visually difficult) performance by Christian Bale.

Dry then Catch

he wanted to lose even more weight for the role, but the docs wouldn't let him

I'm glad to know you liked it.  Some women at work were saying how awful it is - so I've not picked it up yet.  I will now.

Underneath this flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character.

Why is it listed as El Maquinista on imdb?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/

I believe it was funded by the Spanish.

So it's like a Spaghetti Western, only it's Spanish, not Italian? And also not a Western?

i don't remember exactly but the spanish word for the Machinist has some dual meaning apropos to the plot that doesn't correlate in English

I bought a used copy of this and finally got around to watching it last night. I have to agree with beefy's first post. This was a very well done film. I can't believe Christian Bale lost over 60 lbs. for the role and then went straight into preparing for Batman.

One of the imdb reviews spoke about all the allusions to Dostoyevsky, but I've never read any of his work.
