Why is gmail slow to upload but...

fast to down load?  It doesn't matter where I'm posting from, uploading 8-10 Mb takes like 3 to 4 minutes but downloading the same volume is less than 40 seconds total.  What gives?

Um.  I'm no computer expert, but are you on a cable modem or ADSL?

Just consider having to do it on dialup.  That makes me appreciative of a 4 minute upload time, anyway.

it's DSL right now at home but even when I do it from work, where we have a T1 connection, it's still takes just as long.

ISP's always throttle upload speeds.  Keeps you from using the bandwidth you pay for to run a web server or something.  At least that's why Time Warner does it.

Usually, for home use it's ADSL - where the upload is like 600% slower.  We have SDSL at work - same speed up as down.  I don't know anything about T1 lines. Where's DS when you need him.

At one point, T1 was the fastest server on the block.  It was part of the early internet infrustructure and to my knowledge, still is.  They base it in hospitals and big universities so that they function like hubs in places where there is emergency power in times of crisis.  It follows the line of thinking from the old MILNET servers that were related to national defense starting in the 50's.

T1's are the basis for the digital technology that voice phone lines used to use. A T1 was equivalent to 24 64Kbps voice channels (yes, the sampling rate of the standard telephone is 64Kbs). Actually it was 23 voice lines and one 64Kbps channel for protocol negotiation. A T1 dedicated to data has 1.54Mbps of bandwidth. But it is dedicated bandwidth, not shared with other customers like cable modem or DSL, so it's not an apple to apple comparison.

T3's begot OC3's (84 T1's)
etc. through OC192 (5376 T1's)

upload speeds are always slower than download speeds.   takes more server processing time.
