I used a screen capture program and recorded without any compression, then used GIMP with GAP to decode the video file, trim off frames I didn't want, then combine into a layered image.  I ran an optimize pass to save space (GIF animation allows you to have frames that don't fill the image area, just like pasting a small region on top of the previous frame, so you save a lot of bytes where it would normally be repeating white pixels in the background that never change), and saved to the GIF.

I just saw that this was best suited to be an animated GIF instead of encoded in a format that is best for photographic data.  Search for "line rider" on YouTube and see how bad the quality is when it is encoded like that.
